Kel-Mac Meeting Minutes from June 21st held at the Oconee County Library, 1080 Experiment Station Road in Watkinsville

Kel-Mac May Meeting Minutes May 17, 2022
President Susan McCullar called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm

Lisa Williamson introduced our speaker for the evening, Dr. Jared Williams. He is a large animal clinician at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine who specializes in in emergency and critical care. During his presentation, “Managing Chronic Wounds”, Dr Williams described the phases of wound healing: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. He also covered reasons for delayed healing such as presence of a foreign body in the wound, and excessive motion at the site of injury. When dealing with chronic wounds, the stage at which healing is “stuck” must be identified so it can be rectified. Treatment options include drainage, immobilization, pressure wrapping, and use of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory agents. Thank you, Dr Williams, for an informative and entertaining presentation!

Trail report

The Fort Mountain camping trip for June was canceled and moved to September. Six riders attended the June day ride at Hard Labor Creek State Park.

July 23 in Monticello: ride out 10 am
August 6 at Sandy Creek: ride out 9 am
August 20 at Monticello: ride out 10 am

Sharon Wood discussed planning another meet and greet ride in October.

Show committee report:

The show committee met, and decided to drop classes that have had no entries this year. We will be adding two new classes, ranch riding and ranch reining, which are both pattern classes. Ranch riding will contain one obstacle.

KEL-MAC SADDLE CLUB

For the past 45 years, Kel-Mac Saddle Club has provided quality equestrian activities in an educational and family atmosphere. Whether you are looking for western, hunter/jumper, trail riding, horse shows, equine programs or anything else horse related, you've come to the right club! Kel-Mac is located in Northeast Georgia with meetings being held in Athens, Georgia and the surrounding areas.

Kel-Mac Saddle Club sponsors an open, all-breed horse show series, held in Madison, Georgia, to help novice riders and horses prepare for higher level showing. Classes include hunter/jumper, western, halter/showmanship, beginner and open classes and much more. 

Trail riding is also a popular activity for Kel-Mac members as they participate in trail rides all along the East Coast.

Summer Chores

There are no shows during the summer, and the long hot days have given us a chance to look back at the previous shows and see if any changes needed to be made, and there were a few. The classes that had no entries were dropped, and we are answering the requests for more classes in the ranch horse division.  We are adding ranch horse riding, which is a pattern class that has a trail obstacle in it.  It sounds like great fun.  We also adding ranch horse reining, which is a more advanced pattern class. To encourage riders to give the reining class a try, we are giving free entry for the September show. Please get the word out so these classes can stay in.

While there are no Kel-Mac shows during the summer, there are other shows and activities we can enjoy.  The hot days we've had have been tough on riding time.  The hard ground has been tough on horses’ feet and the lack of rain tough on our pastures. It seems like yesterday we were lamenting that it was cold and wet.  We can wish for perfect weather, and really enjoy those good days we do have.

Upcoming Meeting Events and Speakers

Lisa Williamson, Vice President

At our Kel-Mac Meeting on July 19, Allie Duberstein will be sharing her experiences with us about 2 equestrian sports, "mounted games", and vaulting. She and her horse are already accomplished competitors in mounted games, and she currently is training with Athena Athletes Vaulting Club. Come and welcome one of our youngest ever speakers to the "fold", and find out more about sports that interest young riders. This meeting will be held at the Watkinsville Public Library at 7:00 pm in the auditorium.

On August 16, Lucy Ray, the Morgan County Extension Coordinator, will be hosting a demonstration on competitive ranch horse riding for our Kel-Mac Meeting. This new sport is becoming popular with young riders. Since Kel-Mac is adding several ranch horses classes to the fall shows, plan to come to this demonstration to learn more about this equestrian activity. Further details and location will be announced in July.

Allie Duberstein, mounted on one of her competition horses, will be our July speaker.
