Kel-Mac Saddle Club Meeting Minutes
Date 3/19/2024
The meeting started at 7:05 pm at the Watkinsville Public Library on South Barnett Shoals in Watkinsville, GA.
Approval of minutes
The minutes of the previous meeting were approved.
Program
Dr Michelle Coleman, an internal medicine clinician from the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine, talked about how to recognize and treat equine metabolic syndrome, and which breeds of horses were most at risk. She talked about her field research project that is currently underway. Client-owned horses that have been diagnosed with insulin resistance are enrolled in a trial that is evaluating a new oral therapeutic agent. Dr. Coleman and her Team will determine if the new medication improves test horses’ glucose and insulin responses to an oral sugar test better than the control.
Show Report
Show dates for this year are April 13th, May 18th, September 7, and October 5th. Judges have been hired, but a trail judge is still needed for the April 13th show. The Show Committee has updated show sheets, class descriptions, and the show rules and regulations. View these updated forms at kelmac.com. Online registration (and payment) is now available on the website. The jumping courses have been revised, and a “painting party” was planned for Saturday, March 23 to freshen up the wooden jumps. New show flyers are available to display in feed stores, veterinary offices, and tack stores.
Trail Report
Sharon Wood reported that the trails they rode at AH Stephens March 3/8-3/10 were better than expected. Rain curtailed some of the riding, but campers had a great time socializing and playing UNO during the rain events. The day ride at Sandy Creek Park occurred in great weather. In April, the camping trip is planned at Fort Mountain for April 19-21. Camping sites and stalls are in very limited supply. The Spring Meet and Greet is planned for April 27th at Heritage Park.
New Business
Valerie encouraged everyone to help spread the word about the jump painting party at the Ag Center on March 23 from noon to 4 pm. The April 13th Show is rapidly approaching. Volunteers are needed to help set up the jumps on April 12 in the afternoon, as well as help run the Show on April 13th.
